Awareness for Critical Events – Lecture
Manfred Müller is airline captain and General Manager Flight Safety Research of the Deutsche Lufthansa, one of the biggest airlines worldwide with over 1.000.000 employees and a turnover of about 30 billion Euro. Like in other airlines, the issues of air safety are of utmost importance to the Lufthansa. Here it becomes evident that the human factor contributes decisively to risk minimisation, because man – by contrast to the computer – is gifted with intuition and is able to carry out plausibility checks.
However, man presents also an important risk factor, as he is more likely to make mistakes in routine works or when working under pressure and stress. A central task in risk management thus is to develop measures to recognize errors at a very early stage and to prevent or at least minimize their negative effects.
Against this background Mr. Müller in his lecture will draw parallels between the processes in a cockpit or in a tower and those inpatient and outpatient care in order to arouse awareness for critical events also abundant in ophthalmology.
